Why Doula?
There’s a paradox in menopause. On the one hand, we need community, story sharing opportunities, and social connections around our experience. On the other hand, menopause is like a snowflake, there are similar structures and composition, but no two are the same.
This means each of us need a personalized support plan, that includes community and connection as well as individualized care. It can feel overwhelming to take in all the experiences of varied women while also holding the connection to our own body’s experience.
Discernment is such an important factor in this work. The first step in discerning the right path for you is figuring out where you’re at right now, what your needs are, how your hormones are affecting you, what’s manageable and what needs intervention. What is your body telling you?
To further complicate things, since menopause is a transition, checking in and discerning are ongoing processes. This isn’t about figuring it out one time and fixing your menopause. This is a years long journey, with different obstacles that need different solutions along the way.
The Greek root of the word doula is “a woman who serves.” Your doula is with you on the journey, helping you spot the signs, understand the terrain, develop tools for what is getting in your way, helping you advocate for yourself when you feel lost, and bringing you back to your body’s wisdom.
It’s an honor to be on this journey with you.
